A Thank You and An Invitation
Thank you for being such a talented, dynamic, engaged and occasionally challenging class! Tori and I very much enjoyed getting to know you all. Feel free to keep in touch: we can be found at www.jessecolinjackson.com and www.torifoster.com.
Last but not least, we'd like to invite you to our opening on May 1, 2008. Our photographs, which form just a small part of a larger Gladstone Hotel exhibit, are collectively entitled Timespace. An excerpt from our show text and some sample images are shown below.
Hopefully we'll see you there. Otherwise, have a great summer.

Tori Foster, Jesse Jackson and Jon Reed explore alternative, singular ways of representing our experience of time in space. Each employs a technique that combines visual information from multiple frames into a single, synthetic image. Tori Foster creates low-fidelity portraits of movement through a two-dimensional plane over the span of several seconds. Jesse Jackson presents experiential narratives through the compilation of a linear sequence of moments into surreal, dynamic compositions. Jon Reed captures the essential character, experience and memory of a particular city street by layering successive images taken at regular intervals.
Hopefully we'll see you there. Otherwise, have a great summer.

Hi class:
Here are the groups for the Activate aftermath.
Documentation
Leigh
Eve
Jenny
Milena
Amanda
The documentation team will create a video and a downloadable PDF, all of which will be available via the blog.
Recycling
Priscilla
Heejin
Song
Amy
Marlissa
The recycling team will figure out what do with all of the waste material our experience generated. Ideally, material will be redeployed, perhaps as prizes. The recycling team will also post a document to the blog that lists all items used (with quantities) and how they were recycled.
Prize for Inside Out Food
Adam
Nicole
Robert
Prize for Big Cake
Zach
Andrey
Emily
Prize for Mirror Mirror
Inbal
Ann
Alex
The prize teams will create named prizes (ie "most engaging," or "least wasteful") for the listed experience. The team should make a blog post elaborating on why the experience in question deserves the prize, and detailing what they're giving the class in celebration.
Banafsheh will also be posting a breakdown of expenses and providing refunds as appropriate. If you haven't brought $25 yet, please do so next week.

Stick IT!
As requested by Adam: here are some of my photos
I'm holding off showing all of them, just because we wanted to make a film and show it for the last class as a kind of "finalization" and goodbye... Also because we love everyone dearly and want it to be a fun surprise. But these I couldn't resist posting. ENJOY!

An IMPORTANT message from DOCUMENTATION
HEY GUYS!
Our event turned out fantastic! I got a lot of good feedback from other students and even professors.
I managed to take a lot of photographs and the rest of the documentation team has also managed to catch the action by other means. So far so good!
We would like everyone to send ALL and any documentation you might have of your contribution to the project. Please forward this to my email at: ez07te@student.ocad.ca BEFORE SATURDAY AT 12:00PM so that we can put together everything in time.
The documentation team has also devised that the best means of submitting the final documentation is posting it as a .pdf file on the blog so that anyone who wishes to have it, will be able to acquire it. We will do our best to get it on the blog before this coming class.
Wow, what a day!

Today is the big day!!!
Hey everyone, hope to see most of you today at 11:30, we will need as many people as possible, don't trust that "other student" will come - it's not a large class, so if you Can make it - be there!
Yesterday a small group of people worked very hard and maneged to do all the suits, the room team worked really nice and set up everything perfectly!
Camera team - as Adam told you yesterday we found out new things, the great hall is not ours to use and we will need to modify our plans, I suggest coming earlier!!!
We made a trial yesterday and it looks great - so come with confidence...
Don't forget you "stick it" pins and 25 $.
Look at the schedule for today and be responsible!!!
See you soon - Inbal

Projector Needs?
It occurred to me that I may need to book the projector for you . . . someone please let me know what I need to do! I can come down and sign you out a projector tonight for testing if necessary.
Can Someone Move the Stick Men in the Great Hall?
In case I failed to mention it, your stick men are awesome. I've been getting lots of compliments from other instructors.
One problem - the ones in the Great Hall need to be moved to make room for someone else's installation. Could some-one please redistribute them? I've told the other class to carefully take them down and put them in 274 if you don't get to them first.

Tuesday Morning Message from Jesse
Hi Class:
Things are coming together nicely! Great effort from most of you over the weekend. I know that some of your efforts seem like they were for naught, but we wouldn't have made such fruitful decisions if the weekend's experiments hadn't taken place.
Anyone who is lost and feels like they have nothing to do should contact Inbal (shinbala@gmail.com) or Adam (adammarkoliver@hotmail.com). Remember, your Project Three mark is largely determined by your active participation. There's still lots to do.
I have submitted your description to the other instructors, with the following disclaimer.
Section 6 will be occupying room 274 (the ex- student lounge), and some of the seating area directly adjacent to 274. They plan to rear-project onto translucent coro-plast panels that will be mounted between the large column and the wall adjacent to 274. No part of their installation will infringe on the Great Hall.
I'm concerned that you're not allocating enough time on Wednesday morning. If you've got everything ready to go on Tuesday night, then perhaps 11:30 is early enough. . . but make sure you've got everything ready to go. Remember, stuff will take 3 times longer than you think it will, and the Great Hall will be a big mess on Wednesday. In my opinion, you should be able to start setting nearly everything up Tuesday night. You've got a lot of technology to troubleshoot - you should try to do a trial run on Tuesday night if possible.
Once things are set up, I recommend that someone volunteer to "guard" your installation, especially on Wednesday morning from 8:30AM onwards.
Please be considerate when making modifications to the room, and please be considerate with regards to the other installations that will soon be surrounding you. Make sure that whatever you do prior to 11:30 on Wednesday doesn't affect any other instructor/class. Trust me - I'll hear about it, and then you'll hear about it.
I won't be able to check the blog again until 7PM, so give me a call if you need anything. My phone may be off, but I'll check my messages periodically. 647.201.4255.

MUSIC
Hey guys, what were we thinking for the music? Do we want a full on dance party or do we want to switch it up with strange songs in between upbeat ones to get a different reaction from the participants?
Could everyone (or at least some people) bring some songs they want played on a zip drive for Monday's class, so the room group can sort through the music and put together a playlist. Thanks!

SUIT PEOPLE
Alright guys!!
I bought 3 sweat shirts and 3 sweat pants and sewed them together to make 3 suits. They look pretty good even though they don't match and are different materials but they will work. One of my suits has a zipper already but the other 2 do not. So that will have to be done tomorrow when we meet up. Zunera you mentioned you have some zippers? even if they aren't long enough, bring them and we'll try it out, other wise we can go out and buy some tomorrow. I also haven't put any pockets or anything, so that will also be done tomorrow. Marlissa and Zunera, hopefully you have yours done so we can do all the final touch ups tomorrow with the lights and stuff (by hand, not with our machines). Zack, it seems like you have the lighting all figured out. Good stuff. Will you be able to meet with us tomorrow morning as well?
when i say morning, I'm thinking like 10-11 ish yes? no? maybe?
I spent 40 bucks on the clothes, hopefully thats alright (i bought them all at value village)
Girls, keep me posted on how far you've gotten and let me know if were on for tomorrow morning!! (you too zack) and anyone else who would like to help with the finishing touches !!!

Project Three - Description Paragraph
Our experience is meant to be fun, social, interactive. The concept is to create an atmosphere where people are represented without identity. Participants enter a room in which they put on a suit. On the suit is the figure of a human-sized stick man in glowing lights. After the suit is on the participant can go into the next section of the room which is completely dark and has music playing. The participant looses their individual identity as they become merely a glowing stick figure surrounded by other stick figures. This feeling of anonymity allows a freedom of the participants inhibitions; they may feel free to dance like an idiot, dance how they've always wanted to, or merely make their newfound stick figure identity do silly or funny things without fear of embarrassment. The dark room will have a camera sending a live feed of the stick figures to a projector in an open area of the school. Students viewing the projected video will see only the stick figures moving around in the dark and will be intrigued to see what is going on for themselves. After the participant is finished they leave the dark room and take the suit off in the 'threshold' room run by one or two students.
Suits!
hi everyone!! so lets get a move on with the construction of the suits!! one piece, zipper in the back preferably black. some big some small and of course some medium. lets get all ten done for monday plus an extra if possible for testing. lets try our best to get to this stage so that when we figure out all the lights stuff, we have some time to make changes and/or corrections if need be.
nicole had a really great idea, she found a top that already had a zipper in the front so shes going to sew it backwards so that the zipper will exist in the back! saving money and time
if we can all do three that will be enough. we are planning to meet monday mid-morning so hopefully that works for everyone. monday is a very important day! we need to have them completed in order to have time left for the lights.
comment on this post if you can make it monday mid-morning.

My team!please i really want to help.Tell me what should i do what you guys want me to do i feel like a loser thanks :D cheers
project 3
this holiday is screwing up the shipping schedules i'm afraid.apparently there could be problems shipping Monday. there is an afordable option for the El wire, it comes with the switch and battery pack that has a belt loop atachment, so there should be no need for a battery pocket on the suits. possibly just a piece of fabrick that allows the belt clip to attach to.
the company is in Montreal and the price per unit of light wire and battery pack is 29.99 + shipping cost.
but there are too many variables to depend on i think. i am going to go to candian tire and where ever else i can think of to try and figure it out.
but again in reagrds to the suits the zippers or velcro...whatever we use should be in the back i think
*also i'm starting to re concidering crackable glow sticks for the lights

Hi Class:
Please give me a call at 647.201.4255 if you want me to come down and meet with you today. I'm not necessarily in the building (as I haven't heard that anyone else is planning to be) but will be nearby. It's totally up to you.

zach, have we confirmed how the lights should work?? do we need a pocket for the batteries?? where should the pocket be?? should the zipper be in the back if the lights are on the front?? how many connections are we making with the lights?? im hoping to get this all started ASAP and i think that if we know how the lights are going to work we can all get started on our own. maybe you could let us know over the blog?? that way we all have access to the information. thanks!

Stuff from Jesse
Hi Class:
I got a message from my boss about Activate a while back that I should have shared with you sooner. Excerpts from this message are shown below.
----------------------------------------------------------
Dear Intro to Experience Design faculty
We made some important decisions/suggestions related to the final project. PLEASE READ IMMEDIATELY:
1) We will be changing the name to
ACTIVATE!!! XX: Experiments in Experience Design (the XX will be a graphic representation referencing the red X’s in the ceiling and also eXperiments in experience… and changing the activation time - 2:30- 4:30 (this works well with Lib Studies courses and allows students to stagger their participation to accommodate being in a class).
2) The project will be taking place in the following locations now, instead of solely in the Park:
· The Great Hall (5-7 projects)
· The Auditorium (5-7 projects
· Lambert Lounge (rm 187), adjoining the Park (2-4 projects)
· The Mader/Caldwell Passageway (2-3 projects)
· The Main Lobby (passing through, not building anything)(1 project – not physical))
· Butterfield Park (if groups really want to use it, they are welcome to do so, but it will not be a centralized, high-energy site this year). (as many as want it)
IDEAS/RATIONALE:
· involve the whole school community
· create a zone of activityfrom Great Hall to Park/Auditorium that pulls people on campus into our experience design experiments and engages them in the ideas
· bring it largely indoors to cope with the earlier date and potential weather problems and COLDNESS factor (as well as participation/community issues)
· allow for some digital media or more ‘virtual’ or technological projects if desired (better electricity too)
· work to a mandate for less heavy construction, less material waste, more mobility…
· ‘carnival’ atmosphere will lessen, and individual experiments gain space to breathe, gain visual presence and better production values - and are seen by more of the OCAD community
· add some written text explanation of the project overall – I will develop that with some help from you. Written blurb from each team would be valuable.
3) We’ll be making a logo banner, possibly referencing the red X’s in the ceiling as XX for Experience Experiments – which all groups can use as part of their promo efforts. I’ll get that to you by next week sometime. Concept: DON’T MAKE A POSTER (make some other form of advertisement for your project - incorporate logo piece).
I will send you additional info shortly, but just wanted to get this to you as I know things are rolling out right now.
Thanks,
Doreen
----------------------------------------------------------
Most of this should not be new to you. But there are three items of importance in this message that we talked about early on and have since forgotten.
1) No Waste! I notice that many things are being built. . . are they being built from reclaimed materials? Are the materials used recyclable in some way? THERE MUST BE A RECLAMATION PLAN IN PLACE FOR ALL MATERIALS EMPLOYED. Each team should figure out how they plan to deal with their output after the fact.
2) No Posters! I believe I may have only mentioned this in passing, and I'm sorry it didn't come up on Monday. Your posters are great. . . but your stick-men are better. PLEASE DO NOT POST ANY MORE POSTERS. Try to think of more solutions that step outside of the poster box.
3) A Write-up! Could Adam/Inbal please prepare a one-paragraph written description of your installation and post it ASAP?
Things seem to be moving along smoothly and fruitfully . . . remember that if you need my help, I can be around the school tomorrow between 12 and 5.

Thanks,
Doreen

Project 3 - Room Team
I believe we have 274 and we'll soon be ready to transform it. Rob will be buying wood from the lumber yard and it should cost us less than $25. Also i'll be getting the cardboard to cover up windows. As for the padding on those pipes we havent decided firmly on what material we will be using for that...we could use cardboard in the worst case scenario. I believe Mark has black fabric available to us, yes? no?? I just dont know when will we have full access to the room so we can start transforming it.

My biggest worry at this point is completion of the suits. The more we can make the better. We should shoot for ten and no less. I should have made a post eariler today and completed a prototype but it didn't happen. I will personally make a protype suit if nessary. Zack, we have to get the suits done this weekend. You are the the head technical suit guy, this is your responsibility but i will help you. Let's get it done this weekend. I'm posting my number to the blog, yes, 416.471.6286.
Good luck team!

Video Team
Ok, so we went to the AV department and they saisd that if I book the camera 2 days in advance that they would be able to provide that and a 25 ft. long cable. For a live feed we don't need a computer, but unfortunately, there is no way of hanging the cameras off the cieling for a good angle. we must use a tripod. We'll need about 3-4 tapes, ($20 total) if cables need to be purchased, it will be about $25 dollars total (for 30 ft RCA). and AV will provide averything else for free.

posters and stick men
hi team!
I was wondering if the 3 section posters are up or are we going with revealing the whole poster?
I have not yet received any information regarding our pipe cleaners stick men, can everybody please do as many as possible and be at school (Monday- if we are not doing the 3 sections poster) and Tuesday morning to put them up, we need it everywhere and feel free to put them in the bathrooms as well. Let's say we each do at least 50 stick men... is that okay?
Priscilla- I think we need Activate the Park logo on the posters
Room "Confirmed"
Hi All:
Please proceed as if Room 274 is confirmed. I'm 90% there, and feel confident that we've got it. There's still an off chance that we won't, but that's the best I can do for now.
More later,
-Jesse

Project 3, Stick It
Hey guys
Facebook event is doing great: 46 people confirmed as of now. FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT JOINED THE EVENT DO SO AND INVITE YOUR FRIENDS:
I have a question; is this event for everyone or only OCAD Students? Can someone clarify this please.
Posters are up in the school (i only put up 24 of them, we should put up more), Priscilla i changed the poster cause it seemed kind of boring, i hope you dont mind. I also put up little stickers that said STICK IT! on them. I put them on water fountains, bathrooms, etc.
For the suit team, i got five 9V batteries from work for free, let me know if you need them. IF PEOPLE CAN PRINT THIS POSTER AND PUT SOME UP IN THEIR SPARE TIME THAT WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
Activate . . . please update the blog by midnight tonight.
All teams should update the blog with a detailed status report by midnight tonight. Please note the names of all the members of your team. If you're not yet on a team, please find one right away!

Activate (Project 3) - 7 days left!
Hi Class:
Just think: 20 people times 7 days equals 140 days of effort. . .
Keep pushing the project. Don't be afraid to make changes if they improve the experience. As a class, you've had many excellent ideas, and have an excess of talent - but your evaluation hinges on how well you come together as a group to implement an idea and make use of your talent.
Please continue to use the blog to keep everyone up to speed on what you're up to. If you weren't in class on Monday, it's up to you to volunteer for one of the groups listed, and be in touch with me if necessary.
I have cleared my schedule and am at your disposal this Saturday, March 22 from 12-5. Please email me (jjackson@faculty.ocad.ca) if you'd like to meet for any reason - for advice, for help with something, to vent - anything. I'll also be responding to emails and checking the blog frequently. This is your project to take ownership of, but I want to be as helpful to you as possible.

Room Status Update
Hi Class:
Sorry it's taken so long to me to get back to you about the room. I'm actually in a semi-desperate fight with the administration to get you room 274. The Lambert Lounge is being used by another class, though they're willing to have us join them if we don't mind their "screaming" installation. . . obviously not ideal.
I think I'm going to win this fight, but this isn't confirmed. Continue to presume that we have room 274, but don't start to actually build anything until I give the final go-ahead.

Lumber Prices
Hey guys,
I took a little trip to the lumber yard today, to get an idea of cost for lumber. This is the most basic supplies I could think of to build the frame. $1.97 for 2"x3"x8' and $5.77 for thin 4'x8' ply wood. I also thought for safety reasons, we might want to look into foam padding for the pipping that runs on the East wall. I also think we should talk to the wood shop, whether they had any timber to spare or, if once out exhibit is done, they could use the wood afterwards to keep the waste to a minimum.

What Room and What Time ?
Hey everybody,
This is just a note asking if the room team could drop a post when location of our chosen room is confirmed because the promotions team would like that information on our poster. Please post the room number ASAP as soon as you find out please!
Also, if anyone knows for sure if the time specified on our assignment sheet (2:30-4:30pm) is still up to date please let me know! It will also need to be on our poster!
Thanks.
Priscilla.

Hey everybody, above are the groups and their preliminary budget. Some people may still need to be added as I think a couple other people were absent. The Project is DUE NEXT WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26TH, so we got to get cracking. Jesse is going to make labels for our groups so please use them. I know there was some talk of using Facebook, which is fine for promotion, but not for communicating with each other about the project. If you have any questions or concerns you should make a blog post. Also you can contact me or Inbal directly:
Inbal - shinbala@gmail.com
Adam - adammarkoliver@hotmail.com
I think our biggest concern will be suit construction, and i know Zack is spearheading the technical aspect of that so if there is any problem or you guys need help let us know sooner rather than later.

Activate: To Do for March 17
Hi Class:
First off, we've been moved out of 1425. Until further notice, all classes will occur in room 274 at 100 McCaul.
Good work on Monday! I know it was painful and far too short, but there were many promising ideas on the table, all of which will undoubtedly inform your final intervention. More importantly, you're coming together very maturely as a group, and I look forward to working with you to bring your ideas to fruition over the next few weeks.
You have rallied around an as-yet hazy idea about collecting. This could potentially incorporate a moving collection machine; an appeal for students to bring something to donate; the subsequent re-distribution/installation/documentation of the items collected; the ceremonious destruction of all items at the end of the event. . . among other possibilities.
FOR NEXT WEEK: In groups of four or five, assigned below, develop the idea as follows.
For this reason, make use of the blog. Post anything and everything you come up with to the blog, with the label Project 3. There will be nothing else clogging the blog prior to the launch of Activate on March 26, so navigation should be simple. In this way, everyone in our large group can be kept up to speed.
Other things of note:
-Promotions: I will have an Activate graphic for your use shortly.
-Promotions: it has been suggested that the existing OCAD visual identity be employed as part of your branding efforts - especially the orange, blue and pink colours. What do you think?
-Constructions/Materials: there are large translucent coroplast panels available to borrow, but we can't damage them. Those of you who took Form and Structure with me in the fall should know what these are.
-Constructions: there are plinths available, but we can't damage them.
-Materials: there are always great scrap materials in the shops.
-Logistics: we will have access to the great hall as of 6PM on March 24, two days prior to the event.
-Documentations/Logistics: arrangements for cameras and other equipment should be made early. . . as in right away. Better to book and then cancel then to not be able to book at all.
See you on Monday!

FOR NEXT WEEK: In groups of four or five, assigned below, develop the idea as follows.
- Brainstorm how to best create a compelling experience centred on the notion of collecting. Look into precedents that address similar content. Review the constraints on the installation: time, location, material and cost. Come to class on March 17 with one new storyboard that fully details your proposition. We will then collectively amalgamate the propositions into a single effort.
- Each group has been temporarily assigned to a team. Propose the items that this team must address, propose a means to address them, and propose a schedule. For example, you may determine that the Promotions team should design and print stickers by March 22nd, have a website live by March 24th, and print "object collection team" t-shirts for everyone in the class to wear by March 26th.

Temporary Teams
The teams will be re-arranged as per your interests in class on March 17th.Other things of note:

CHAOS ROOM. zunera waheed
One day Jhon entered The Lambert lounge he saw the room full with tubes attached from the walls with chains.
He started going though those tubes.
The tubes were heavy that’s why he didn’t move the tubes; he passed the tubes by going from inside. He got very frustrated; on the other hand he was having fun.
Finally he reached the exit door.

Project 3 - Zack Shields
While walking somewhere downtown for lunch. Joe is consumed with too many thoughts in his head. Stresses at work, relationship problems, and an over all gereral low moral. Joe finds himself searching for an inner harmony he can’t quite find. He knows he must just focus on what needs to be done and do it. But the stress is preventing him from seeing things in a positive cause and effect manor. Getting one job done, will allow him to accomplish the next. Even the choice of where to eat lunch seems overwhelming hard. A detour through Grange Park might inspire a food craving. The park on this particular day is a buzz with people walking around interacting with strange installations that require closer inspection. Joe finds himself in front of something familiar. It’s a life-sized version of Newton’s Cradle. Remembering grade 11 physics class Joe picks up one of the end balls and drops it, colliding with the next ball it starts the chain of events. Joe is instantly mesmerized by the harmony and rhythm of the balls. Waching them move back and forth somehow calms his thoughts and allows him to think more clearly.
