1) Everest's Narrative

It’s mid week, and, I’ve discovered a twenty in my pocket. Sure, I could find all sorts of change laying around, maybe a 5 or two, but, I take this surprisingly crisp 20$ bill as a sign. I did groceries on Sunday…with the suggestion in story form from an older friend of mine, about how Sundays used to be. Who am I not to take the liberties granted to me by godless economy? I got a week and a halfs' worth of G-shopping done. But, I didn’t anticipate a Monday cupboard allowing pilferage of a ¾full box of ‘Wavey Chrisps’ and my package of ‘Ritter Sports’. Suppose a neglectful host should expect such things. My garbage bags though, were raced in and holier than the litter box of Bootsy, whom they gifted all the milk, for which he is grotesquely intolerant. The designer hairspray that keeps me bushy tailed was used as accelerant in attempts to burn away the undigested evidence. Wait, that’s not true. I have cats, that’s all…cats, and a sweet tooth that could potentially be reverse diabetes. God I need a smoke.

2) Brittney's Narrative

It felt good stepping into the grocery store avec
holsters filled with images...loaded images.

Like Sally, the object of my every envy...The trans fat doesn't seem to affect her skin the way it does mine...

A tan, yes, then I could eat all the 'wavey crisps' I desire...maybe that's how she does it...?
A coconut could bring me to this skin perfect ecstacy, I know it... closest thing to a vacation I'll experience till this gout clears up...

Shouldn't be so hard on myself. I'm sure even celebrities have obstacles...
Man my hair's going to have volume tomorrow...

mmm...strong Bones...

Don't mind accounting for all of your needs...just don't make your motives TOO obvious.
Cat stuff
Cat stuff
Cat stuff...
What else did I need?

Right, garbage bags, for next weeks outfit
and...

cigs.My goal is to develope such a stain that people will have no choice but to believe me when I tell them I'm an alien.
Toilette paper what?

Exercise 9 - Amanda Compagnone

First Narrative
Got up at 5, can’t see.
Toothpaste in my eyes.
Food on my face.
Light another cigarette with stained fingers.
High on MSG.
…Dishwashing liquid?
Does it work on intestines?

Second Narrative
Scrub-scrub, clean-clean that’s all I’m ever good for. “Edna the dishes need’a washin’” “Edna my dinner needs’a fixin’”. Didn’t the Good Lord give you two hands? Do it yer self! Sure he keeps a roof over ma head, but it ain’t no picnic. It ain’t as if I couldn’t make my own livin’ I’m as smart as anyone… got my grade 10 and everthin’, but “a womans place’s in the home” he says. With the way he speaks to me I ain’t spendin’ more time than I gots to fixin’ his fancy meals. Curried chicken, HA! I just go down to that big Gro-cer-ree store they gots in town ’n pick ‘em all up fer cheap. With all them frozen things it’ll feed ‘em for a week. At least he lets me keep the money… after the food is bought ‘n all. I guess alls I really need is ma cigarettes and my 29$ fer Bingo down at the hall.

A (Third) Reading Break Message from Jesse

On Wednesday, you are requested to attend a lecture by Tali Krakowski from Imaginary Forces.

You're advised to arrive early, as seating may be limited. It's in the Auditorium starting at 6:30PM. I'll be there with my Wednesday class, and will be looking for you - consider this lecture mandatory.

-Jesse

A (Second) Reading Break Message from Jesse

Hi Class:

Thank you to all of you who posted concepts and feedback. To those of you posted either requirement late, you were penalized 25%. To those of you who haven't posted at all: don't bother, it's too late. It troubles me that so many of you saw fit to abandon 10% of your final grade.

I've given feedback to all students who posted concepts - take a look. In some cases, the feedback is very brief, especially if you had already received substantial feedback from your colleague(s). Take a moment to read my feedback to other students, as it is widely applicable. Links that I sent individual students to are listed below.

On Designing for Flow, another GUI-centred concept with wide applicability

On Johannes Itten and The Art of Colour

On Georg Simmel, Fashion, and "the dialectical tension between the individual and society"

On the Narrative of Collecting via Benjamin and Baudrillard: "It is invariably oneself that one collects"

On OCAD instructor Todd Falkowsky's use of colour to create a self-generated narrative of place

At this time, you should be focussing your effort on a single prototype, for user testing in class next week by a group that (conveniently) represents a cross-section of your target audience.

I very much appreciated the degree to which many of you are targeting your efforts towards this audience, which is a difficult nut to crack. Young adults (and I include myself in this group) have complex needs - specifically, complex needs of creativity/self-actualization, to make reference to the Hierarchy of Needs page from Universal Principles of Design. As I noted to David, much of this complexity is a result of the conflicting demands of identity: a desire to relate to one's peers while maintaining individuality. This tension is especially pronounced in the art world (and in the extreme, the art academy).

On a lighter note, check out Homies for a sophisticated (and hilarious) synthesis of collectibility (another common theme in many of your propositions), narrative and personas.

See you next week.

ps: Are/were Homies popular in Toronto? In California, circa 2001, they were all the rage, selling in coin machines in every supermarket. I'm totally clueless when it comes to popular culture, so you'll have to fill me in.

pps. Some of you have missed the boat on the function of Comments and Labels. Learn them. Live them. Love them.

Project 2- Song Kim

Long Chopsticks
A player had to place objects on the plate on top of the head only using chopsticks. One must hold, not the middle, but near the end of the chopsticks. Must start over if an object has been dropped. Whoever transfers all the objects to the plate fastest wins.

Board!
Each player picks a card from the stack and advances according to its colour. If a shape card has been chosen, and if it is ahead of the player, move forward, and if it is behind, move backward to the space with the shape.

Battle Rocks

Each player gets health point of 100. An attacking player will throw the set of attacking rocks, and defending player throws defending rocks. Each player catches one rock and compare the numbers hidden inside the rocks. If attacking point is higher, defending player will lose the difference from health point. If defending point is higher, then nothing happens. Each player will take turn of attack and defense

Dart Face
Each slice consists of different eyes, nose, and mouth. A player shoots three darts to form a face. First dart is for eyes, second is for nose, and third is for mouth.

Rat Droppings
1. Place large and small number cards randomly throughout the track.
2. Each player gets a bingo card.
3. Place the rat at starting point of the track.
4. Let the rat slide.
5. Whatever number the rat drops, cross off from the bingo card.
6. Whoever crosses off 5 lines wins the game.

Sinking Bomb
Direction:
1. Pour low % alcohol beverage (eg. beer) into a big glass.
2. Fill low alcohol beverage up to certain point. Do not overfill.
3. Gently place a small glass (eg. shot glass) so that it floats on low alcohol beverage.
4. Each person takes a turn and pour high % alcohol beverage (eg. vodka) directly into the small glass. Amount does not matter.
5. Whoever sinks the small glass has to drink the mixed beverage.

Project 2, Six Sketch Concepts - Leigh McLaughlin

"OCAD Doll"

A fabric doll bodice can be clothed, and the outfits accessorized; the various pieces being typical of certain character steriotypes around OCAD. Also, the facial features/expressions of this doll (similar to Mr/Mrs. Potato Head) are interchangable.

"All the World is a Brain"

This board game takes place in a skull, on a brain. Instead of countries battling for boarders and territory, gaining soldiers and means, -different aspects of ones personality battle for concious ground (merging, destroying,...battling). The skull would create somewhat of a bowl about the flat, brain patterned board. The playing pieces would be constructed as such that they could be joined together.

"Wo/Man Child"

With the rise of 2D-bustious-babe-tatoos-turned-sylicone-implant, and a rising general fear among the masses, a latex 'stress ball' shaped, coloured and textured as a breast with erectable nipple (the use of baking soda and water) could do nothing but good. My model would be the size of an A cup.

" 'Ve Ye Got Som't To Say!"

A set of political figures, celebrities, and jo/jill-shmoes...children ect, in that thin plastic you wet, and then stick to your window can be arranged clothed, accessorized and positioned in whatever way that fits your ends as a person with something to say. This game/toy would come with cartoon/comic book frames, speech and thought bubbles ect. Your depiction, wether personal, political, or nonsensicle, becomes everchanging and available to people who look your window wayward.

"Multi-Uni Stamp"

Akin to those nail-filled frames, that one lays their hand into, to make an impression, this stamps purpose is elusive. The stamp, about 2 inches squared, is composed of many 1mm-diameter cylanders of rubber, in 2 frames, between which is bound an elastic. Loosening the elastic slightly, the small end of a pencil could be used to press certain cylanders of rubber down, in order to make a stamp pattern. Once desired pattern is complete, user tightens elastic and dips stamp in ink, and stamps wherever.

"Party Kick Kit"

This kit includes several 2D optical illusions, knotted cherry stems, paper and coloured pencils, a silicone ear, fake carpet burning cigarette, stick on mustache and jelly beans. There would be included, a pamphlet detailing all the wonderful ways these things could be used and what sequesnces are most successful.

Project 2 Concepts - Emily

A Reading Break Message from Jesse

At this time, you should be engaged with Part 3 of Project Two, namely:

Develop six concepts for a toy or game in sketch form. Solicit feedback on your concepts from one of your colleagues, and deliver feedback to them in return. Your feedback should consider how each concept relates to our notions of what constitutes fun, and how the course material presented to date could be employed to improve the concept. Your six concepts must be posted to the blog by February 18 at 11:59PM, and your feedback must be posted to the blog by February 20 at 11:59PM.

The course material presented to date could include any number of things: material from the presentations, such as those entitled Establishing Structure, Maps and Diagrams, Conveying Information or Basic Principles of Experience Design; material from the Saffer or either of the Norman readings; material from our in-class deconstruction of fun, from our textbook, or from some other research you may have done for your own toy or game. What I'm not-so-subtly suggesting here is that you should take some time to review the first half of the course before you provide feedback. This isn't to say that you shouldn't express your gut feelings about your partner's concepts - you most definitely should - but that you should attempt to back these feelings up with some knowledge.

In support of this, I've picked some headings in Universal Principles of Design that are relevant to this Project. Please consider this assigned reading. Feel free to reference this material in your feedback.

Things to consider about the design process we're engaged with:
Development Cycle
Iteration
Prototyping

Things to consider about the nature of fun:
Archetypes
Hierarchy of Needs
Storytelling

Things to consider when constructing your prototype:
Aesthetic-Usability Effect
Iconic Representation
Inverted Pyramid
Ockham's Razor
Mimicry

I'll be providing feedback to all students who have posted to the blog by the end of the day on February 20th. I'd like to wait until you've received feedback from your colleague before I contribute.

Remember, these concepts constitute 5% of your final grade, and the feedback you provide constitute another 5%. If you haven't already posted to the blog, please do so. There will be a 25% penalty applied to all late posts, but that's better than nothing. I will be exceptionally critical of any prototypes presented next week that haven't had the benefit of this process.

If your partner hasn't posted anything to the blog, and you're unable to determine whether they plan to do so, please pick one of your other colleagues that has posted to the blog and provide feedback to them. Pick someone who hasn't already received more than one person's feedback.

Hope you're all having a good reading break. Don't hesitate to email me with any questions or concerns.

-Jesse

ps. I will be sending all of you your mid-term feedback, including your marks for Project One by Sunday, February 24 at 11:59PM.
pps. Your psychogeographic maps are beautiful. Thank your for your efforts.

Project 2- six concepts, Jenny Kassen

1) the license plate game:
pictures of random license plates are taken and printed on card, a player must use the letters of the plate to create a word that describes both car and driver.

2) Bar rally:
several teams are assembled and given lists of bars, with dares to be done at each, or clues to be collected.
for each stop, the team must video tape their dare, different stops have different value,
first place prize to be given out when footage has been reviewed, and points tallied.

3)Tour game, know your city:
a game to be made available through tourist information centers; would be a sort of treasure hunt through a city's historical, cultural and contemporary areas of interest. allows for a fun, interactive and well rounded glimpse of a city.

4)secrets, stories and names:
an ice breaker. on paper, players write down a secret or story. each paper is handed to a random player, and they must identify the author of the note. once the identifying is complete, members will take turns introducing their "person", re telling the story or secret they received, and the group must decide whether it is truth or fiction.

5)shortcuts:
players are given a set of scenarios and each person has a limited amount of time to get themselves "out of it".

6) rock star:
a keyboard is provided with a screen that records and displays notes played.
teams are given randomly chosen key words and a note to start with. Each team member is responsible for one line of music and one line of text. teams have a limited amount of time to create a song. songs must be performed karaoke style at the end, with the most screaming into the mics as possible.

Project Two, Six Concepts - Ann

Since I'm better at describing than sketching, here you go:

1. Mazes are printed on 2 or more different cards. The set comes with several sheets of tracing paper which are the same size as all the mazes. The tracing sheets are placed over the mazes for the user to solve. The way out of the first maze creates part of a line drawing. The user then moves the sheet to the next maze(s) to finish the drawing, which will turn out to be a dirty picture. Ha!

2. So, there are these giant helmets with bats on them, with little foam balls velcroed to the ends that stick up like antennae. The object of the game is to knock the opponents' balls off their bat helmets, without using your hands.

3. CDs are a terrible way to carry music. They get scratched, The jewel cases are clunky and break. All the audio and visual information on a CD can now be in digital form, like on a data key of some sort. Music stores could also have computers with this information that a user could pay for and then bluetooth quickly onto their mp3 player. I like the idea of a data key because of the opportunity to play with the 3D shape of the music carrier as a way of identifying different bands and albums, as well as creating an artifact that can be easily designed, manufactured (because there is no need to prent and assemble), transported and stored at a fraction of the cost . Since keys can also hold alot more than CDs, bands can also put on videos and album art in digital form if they so chose.

4. Drinking chess. Each chess piece is actually a shotglass to be filled with some sort of alcohol. When a piece is taken, the opponent drinks the shot.

5. Mr. Ex-Potato Head. So, you print up a picture of a not-so- friendly ex. The box comes with stickers of moustaches and devils horns, what have you, and can be later put on the included dart board with darts to go along with it. nuff said.

6. Jewellery that comes in sets of 2 or more, they light up when the other members of the set are in the room. This would be nice for heart shaped jewellery.

Project 2, Concepts - Amanda Compagnone

Sorry if it's hard to read Leigh! Call me if you have any problems.

My Six Games - Inbal Shreemohan

Here are my six games/toys ideas, hope they are not too complex.

- image 1 - - image 2 -

1. Board game; 2-4 players, board (see image 1), the "swing of luck" (image 2), cards and a dice.
Purpose: be the first to the finish line.
In the swing of luck there will be notes that the players write missions in advance and is
placed randomly. Above the box there is a pole with a small magnetic ball, it will grab one of
the notes when a player swing it. missions such as: Screem that you love a vegan zebra next
to strangers, drink Vodka and say a complex sentence etc.
The cards will include group task such as: the couple that fined more words from the letters
"nmhaceite"in a minute, the first to finish a phrase or song words.
2. 1-4 players, packs of shapes, large cards with images of structures
Purpose: be the first to create the shape from all the shapes.

3. Players - 3-8.

Series of cards with symboles from different themes (food, landscape, toys, cars, electronics etc)
each player recieve a stick with the theme he need to collect. Everyone sits in a circle and recieve 4 cards, the first player start taking a card and moving it quickly to the next person, if he need the card (his theme) h will replace it with one of his. On the same time there are colored sticks on the table. If a player has a series of 4 from his theme he takes on sticks quietly, other that see him will also take untill one person is left with no stick - he loses and needs to perform a "panishment".

4. "Who didn't cheat, Where and Why?"

Similar to the game "the clue" based on the notion of Soap Opera in which everybody have sex with everyone. There is a board game with different rooms, up too 8 players. There are cards for "the Cheaters" , "reasons" and "location", each player recieve few card of each catagories, but three cards (one of each) are kept aside, which represent the only person that did not cheat, where and why. Each time a player can ask someone if they have information about specific items.

5. This is a sort of phisicaly path that has obstacle such as tiny golf hole where thegolf club has a magnetic end and the ball is the opposite magnetic relation to it. Other things includes placing bids with chpsticks from a color you where givven before, answer a ridel and similar. There will be two path like this and you will compete one person, and the winner will compete another.

In general all of the ideas of games are menth to be challenging and with a sense of competition. Some require physical action and thus funny, surprising and the end is not known in advance, require some intelligence, and might be embarrassing - which is fun for all. The baord game (1 and 5 mostely) creates a nerrative as the game continue, who answerd more, who is the best in one part etc.
