Exercise 10: Photoshop Tennis Website

Creating a Webpage
1) Create a folder on your desktop titled “Webpage”. Inside that folder create another folder titled “images”.

2) Place your six images from last week’s class into that folder. Re-title those images, “1.jpg”, “2.jpg”, “3.jpg”, “4.jpg”, “5.jpg”, “6.jpg”.

3) Open Dreamweaver. Create a new HTML page. Save that page in the “Webpage” folder, and call it “index.html”.

4) Explore the “Properties” tool bar in Dreamweaver as well as the three different interface layouts (code, split, design).
*Notice that once you have created a new font style it can be accessed in the “style” drop down menu in the Properties tool bar.

5) Once you have explored the interface a little, make a page that includes the following:

A) Title
B) Authors (you and your partner)
C) Starting image
D) Navigation buttons
E) A background colour that is not white

6) Once you have designed a page that you like, save it again as “index.htm”. Now choose “save as” and call the page “2.html”. Repeat this process, saving the page as “3.html”, “4.html”, “5.html” and “6.html”.

7) Open each page in Dreamweaver and change the images to correspond with the title of the pages (for instance, “3.htm” should feature 3.jpg). Also change the locations that your navigation buttons link to (for instance the “Backwards” link on the “3.html” page should link to “2.html”, and the “Forward” link should link to “4.html”).

8) Hit F12 to test your page and see if all the links work. If so, move on to uploading the webpage.

Uploading a Webpage
1) Open Fetch.

2) In Fetch input the following information:

Hostname: ‘webspace.ocad.ca’
Username: your own username (your OCAD login id)
Password: your own password (your OCAD login password).
Connect using: “SFTP”.

3) Start by double-clicking on the www folder in order to go inside it. (If you want something to be visible on the web, it must go INSIDE the www folder.)

After you are inside the www folder, click on the “Put” command (at the top of the screen). Then select the files you want to upload.
*ONLY use the “Put” command. Do not drop the files in or copy and paste them.

4) Open an internet browser (Firefox or Safari) and type in the following URL: http://webspace.ocad.ca/~youruserid

Notice the “tilde” ~ symbol before your user id. You must type it in the URL to get to your website. Also remember to substitute your own OCAD login id where it says youruserid. You should see your index.htm page.

5) Create a post on the blog that includes your name and the URL for your index.html page (the same one you typed into the browser in step 7 above.

Project 2-Mark O

Make Me Laugh: The object of this game is for one opponent to maintain a serious expression whilst the other tries to make them laugh. This game is fun because it is silly, humorous and one never knows how far someone will go to make them laugh.

RED BALL: The objet of this game if for two people to stand 2 meters apart and try to hit each other with a red ball that is attached to the wrist. It is especially fun because the ball that you aim at your opponent might come right back at you. It involves a lot of movement and swaying in order to avoid the balls.

Connectors: This toy is a construction toy that is easy to learn and fun to play with due to its simplicity. It comes with connectors that one uses to put together many forms and shapes. It can be bought in many sizes so as one grows up they can move on to more complex shapes which become challenging.

MADOUGIE!
Madougie is a mix of darts and scattegories. There is a circular target board with different areas one can throw the madougie. Smaller areas account for more points whilst bigger areas account for smaller amounts of points. This provides a challenge for the players who want to advance quickly. It is played by two people who keep score on a piece of paper.
To start a turn, one throws the madougie at the preferred target. Once the madougie is thrown the timer which is set for 2 min and a card are picked up at the same time. Ex. I throw the madougie and hit 10 points. I pick up a card and it says animals on it. I have to think of 10 animals within 2 minutes. Once i do that i say MADOUGIE! and i officially have the points. Say someone hits 15 and cannot think of 15 animals in 2 min the other person gets the points. The game ends when both opponents have had 10 rounds, the scores are tallied and the person with the most points wins.

Random Facts: This game is designed to educate the players on random facts and knowledge one would otherwise not know. A card is picked up and there is a question on it. The whole point is to guess and the person who guesses closest to the right answer has an advantage. For example:

Q: How long is the longest fish on record in feet?
A: The Whale Shark, 59 feet captured in 1919 in Thailand.

If one guessed 39 feet they would have subtract the difference between the highest number and the lowest number. In this case 20. The person with the least amount of points after 20 turns wins the games.

Exercise 9 - Allison Lawson

Narrative 1
Everyone in my family works as an officer. I was going through to be a cop when the car accident busted my sodding knee up. Now I work security. I hate it really. There's no challenge in it. I mean, what are these stupid little sods thinking when they steal from this store. That they won't get caught? They will. If I'm on the job, they will.

Narrative 2

I wash my hands ten times a day. I always recheck the locks on the door and my windows in my flat five times before going to bed. I collect things. Anything really. Today I bought some things. Things I might not have a use for, but I need them. I don't want the four toy cars. I don't really like tea, especially mint. Two kinds of rice. I'm not going to use any of this, except the crackers I bought. They sooth my ulcer. Really though, most of what I put in my shopping cart just felt right. I knew I needed to own these things.

I was also hoping that buying these items would draw attention away from the six tubes of mascara I shoved in my purse, the four car air fresheners I hid in my back pocket, and the two cans of cat food I shoved down my pants. Unfortunately it didn't. Shortly after I was cashed through, I saw him coming. He was in uniform with his handcuffs hanging from his belt. I knew this day would come, but I wasn't expecting it to come today.

Sometimes we have to make quick decisions in life and I decided on running. Why they make pull doors with a push bar, I'll never know. Maybe it's to stop the people like me. Mistakes like this are always worse when you make them at high speed. I could feel the blood running down my face and everyone was staring at me because I was bleeding and lying on the floor. I think I may have broken my nose. I need to wash my hands.

Exercise Nine Nicole

Receipt Eight

I’ve had no time for close friends or family at all lately. All I’m focused on is sports and playing hockey. Tonight seems like a good night to finally get everyone together and reassure them that I’m not a terrible person for never being around or calling anyone. I don’t even know what to buy or make for dinner, I don’t even know what I buy to eat for myself; I’m never really home. I’ll just pick up some cheap stuff for me and then order out some food for everyone else, too bad I can’t cook like how I can play hockey. That would be one hell of a dinner!

Project Two - Adumb.

1. Make your own animal game. There are a bunch of drawings or photographs of different parts of animals that the player can put together in fun ways to make their own new species.

2. Bee Hive board game. 2-4 players race to the flowers to get the delicious nectar and then race back to the hive. Players roll a dice to see how many spots they can move. Players can leave behind 'honey slicks' the block the pathes of other players.

3. 'Bad Impressions' a game in which players must embody an animal or celebrity using only body language and facial expressions. Like sherades but harder (no first word, how many syllables shit.)

4. 'Fill the hole: time trials' slightly different sized circles are made to fit specific holes. Get all the right sized circles in the right holes as fast as possible. Great for design students as it forces you too look at the slight dimentional variations of objects.

Exercise 9 - Zack Shields

Narrative 1.

As i walk in the apartment the smell of fresh flowers fills the front hall. To some, a nice smell to come home to. but for me, it means my roommate Brooke is most likely upset. Probably to do with a fight with her boyfriend. she will shut herself up in her room and surround herself in flowers. Watching movies like Sleepless in Seattle all night, drinking sugary coffee. Poor thing, i hate to see her like this. With the Microwave and toaster in her room, not to mention the on-suite bathroom she literally stays inside for days, succumbing only to the bizarre food cravings.

"So I ask Perry to do the groceries, and with what happened last time, I made him a little list. You can't expect him to remember things anymore... I'm assuming it's because of the video games. But anyway, he comes back with about four out of the twenty things I asked him to get and somehow manages to spend almost 25 €! He bought four toy cars!"

"Isn't he 46 now?"

"That's my point."

Exercise 9 - Andrey Chernykh

Narrative 1:

Narrative 2:

The fridge got empty pretty fast. Those animals just can’t control themselves, can they? It is almost over now, as I see John getting up from the table to say good bye to the rest of them. This little gathering lasted a bit too long and I am glad there won’t be another. All those consumed treats and what do I get in return? A table full of garbage and leftovers, just great! John disappeared outside again, probably for another smoke with one of his buddies. Men and their unexpected parties… They even ate my yogurt, unbelievable! No worries, another walk to the supermarket should clear my mind. As I made my way to the hallway I saw a Joshua stuffing my new rubber boots in his bag with his hairy hand. He looked up, and for a moment we stared at each other without saying a word. Then, in the blink of an eye he disappeared in a doorway. With an expression of shock and anger, I stumbled my way to the doorway shouting, “Thief! You bloody thief!” I put on my dirty sneakers while listening to his footsteps echoing in the stairwell. I ran out of the building and all I could see is Joshua’s car disappearing in the distance. “That bastard,” I thought, as I was walking through slippery mud and dirt. John’s disappearance and lack of help did not concern me anymore. And I guess Joshua is ready to do anything for those one night stands. I felt water in my shoes and another nasty feeling came in to stay for a cup of tea. Should I give up on all of this now? Is this life worth living? Without notice a ray of light shone through my mind. “Good thing I have my shopping list with me,” I said to myself and reached into my pocket. I walked into the supermarket with a bright smile on my face, looked on my list and said “There wont be another party, all is for me...lets see, apple juice, iced tea, pickles, assorted waffles, cream cheese…”

1) Everest's Narrative

It’s mid week, and, I’ve discovered a twenty in my pocket. Sure, I could find all sorts of change laying around, maybe a 5 or two, but, I take this surprisingly crisp 20$ bill as a sign. I did groceries on Sunday…with the suggestion in story form from an older friend of mine, about how Sundays used to be. Who am I not to take the liberties granted to me by godless economy? I got a week and a halfs' worth of G-shopping done. But, I didn’t anticipate a Monday cupboard allowing pilferage of a ¾full box of ‘Wavey Chrisps’ and my package of ‘Ritter Sports’. Suppose a neglectful host should expect such things. My garbage bags though, were raced in and holier than the litter box of Bootsy, whom they gifted all the milk, for which he is grotesquely intolerant. The designer hairspray that keeps me bushy tailed was used as accelerant in attempts to burn away the undigested evidence. Wait, that’s not true. I have cats, that’s all…cats, and a sweet tooth that could potentially be reverse diabetes. God I need a smoke.

2) Brittney's Narrative

It felt good stepping into the grocery store avec
holsters filled with images...loaded images.

Like Sally, the object of my every envy...The trans fat doesn't seem to affect her skin the way it does mine...

A tan, yes, then I could eat all the 'wavey crisps' I desire...maybe that's how she does it...?
A coconut could bring me to this skin perfect ecstacy, I know it... closest thing to a vacation I'll experience till this gout clears up...

Shouldn't be so hard on myself. I'm sure even celebrities have obstacles...
Man my hair's going to have volume tomorrow...

mmm...strong Bones...

Don't mind accounting for all of your needs...just don't make your motives TOO obvious.
Cat stuff
Cat stuff
Cat stuff...
What else did I need?

Right, garbage bags, for next weeks outfit
and...

cigs.My goal is to develope such a stain that people will have no choice but to believe me when I tell them I'm an alien.
Toilette paper what?

First Narrative
Got up at 5, can’t see.
Toothpaste in my eyes.
Food on my face.
Light another cigarette with stained fingers.
High on MSG.
…Dishwashing liquid?
Does it work on intestines?

Second Narrative
Scrub-scrub, clean-clean that’s all I’m ever good for. “Edna the dishes need’a washin’” “Edna my dinner needs’a fixin’”. Didn’t the Good Lord give you two hands? Do it yer self! Sure he keeps a roof over ma head, but it ain’t no picnic. It ain’t as if I couldn’t make my own livin’ I’m as smart as anyone… got my grade 10 and everthin’, but “a womans place’s in the home” he says. With the way he speaks to me I ain’t spendin’ more time than I gots to fixin’ his fancy meals. Curried chicken, HA! I just go down to that big Gro-cer-ree store they gots in town ’n pick ‘em all up fer cheap. With all them frozen things it’ll feed ‘em for a week. At least he lets me keep the money… after the food is bought ‘n all. I guess alls I really need is ma cigarettes and my 29$ fer Bingo down at the hall.

A (Third) Reading Break Message from Jesse

On Wednesday, you are requested to attend a lecture by Tali Krakowski from Imaginary Forces.

You're advised to arrive early, as seating may be limited. It's in the Auditorium starting at 6:30PM. I'll be there with my Wednesday class, and will be looking for you - consider this lecture mandatory.

-Jesse

A (Second) Reading Break Message from Jesse

Hi Class:

Thank you to all of you who posted concepts and feedback. To those of you posted either requirement late, you were penalized 25%. To those of you who haven't posted at all: don't bother, it's too late. It troubles me that so many of you saw fit to abandon 10% of your final grade.

I've given feedback to all students who posted concepts - take a look. In some cases, the feedback is very brief, especially if you had already received substantial feedback from your colleague(s). Take a moment to read my feedback to other students, as it is widely applicable. Links that I sent individual students to are listed below.

On Designing for Flow, another GUI-centred concept with wide applicability

On Johannes Itten and The Art of Colour

On Georg Simmel, Fashion, and "the dialectical tension between the individual and society"

On the Narrative of Collecting via Benjamin and Baudrillard: "It is invariably oneself that one collects"

On OCAD instructor Todd Falkowsky's use of colour to create a self-generated narrative of place

At this time, you should be focussing your effort on a single prototype, for user testing in class next week by a group that (conveniently) represents a cross-section of your target audience.

I very much appreciated the degree to which many of you are targeting your efforts towards this audience, which is a difficult nut to crack. Young adults (and I include myself in this group) have complex needs - specifically, complex needs of creativity/self-actualization, to make reference to the Hierarchy of Needs page from Universal Principles of Design. As I noted to David, much of this complexity is a result of the conflicting demands of identity: a desire to relate to one's peers while maintaining individuality. This tension is especially pronounced in the art world (and in the extreme, the art academy).

On a lighter note, check out Homies for a sophisticated (and hilarious) synthesis of collectibility (another common theme in many of your propositions), narrative and personas.

See you next week.

ps: Are/were Homies popular in Toronto? In California, circa 2001, they were all the rage, selling in coin machines in every supermarket. I'm totally clueless when it comes to popular culture, so you'll have to fill me in.

pps. Some of you have missed the boat on the function of Comments and Labels. Learn them. Live them. Love them.
